A legislative bill in the state of Kansas, USA, which aimed to place restrictions and bans on cryptocurrency donations in political campaigns, has been postponed until January 2024.
This bill, known as HB 2167, was introduced by Kansas House lawmakers on January 25, 2023. It sought to impose a $100 limit on all political donations during the state's primary or general elections. Additionally, the bill mandated that politicians must immediately convert any cryptocurrency donations they receive into US dollars, without any option to retain or utilize the funds in cryptocurrency form.
Shortly after its introduction, the bill was referred to the House Elections Committee, which subsequently recommended its passage with certain amendments in a report shared on February 22, 2023.
However, HB 2167 was removed from the legislative calendar due to non-compliance with the state's Rule 1507, specifically "Disposal of Bills Subject to Certain Deadlines," which enforces strict deadlines on specific bills. The bill's title, "Amend campaign finance laws to regulate and limit the use of cryptocurrencies and prohibit the use of any political funds collected by candidates or candidate committees for candidates for federal office," underscores its intent.
The regulation of cryptocurrency donations in political campaigns has been a topic of debate in various US states. While some states have considered imposing restrictions, others have taken a different approach. For example, California initially banned cryptocurrency political donations in 2018 but reversed this decision in July 2022.
In contrast, at the federal level, nine US senators have expressed their support for Senator Elizabeth Warren's bill aimed at combating the illegal use of cryptocurrencies for money laundering. This bipartisan coalition is backing Senator Warren's bill, which she has described as the toughest proposal on the table to address the illegal use of cryptocurrencies and equip regulators with additional tools.
