Valentine's Day, a celebration of romance, also serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of scams targeting individuals seeking love.
The online dating industry is booming, with projected revenues of $310 million by 2024 and an estimated 440 million users by 2027, according to Statista.
On February 14, Binance Security and Compliance shared a report detailing the alarming rise in romance scams observed by security and analytics firms in recent times.
According to Norton's 2023 Cybersecurity Insights Report, one in four adults globally reported falling victim to an online dating or romance scam. In 2016, the FTC received 11,235 complaints related to dating and romance scams, but this figure surged to around 70,000 reports in 2022, resulting in losses of $1.3 billion.
Cryptocurrency payments now account for 34% of reported losses in the romance scam sector. However, a recent U.S. Treasury Department report suggests that cash remains the preferred choice for global money laundering operations.
Binance's internal data from 2023 estimates that romance scams comprised 2% of total reported cases, with victims suffering an average loss of $14,000 each. Tigran Gambaryan, Binance's head of financial crimes compliance, drew parallels between romance scammers and financial fraudsters, emphasizing their shared tactics of exploiting trust to deceive.
Binance's Head of Global Intelligence and Investigations shared anecdotes of cases handled by the team, including instances where victims lost significant sums to scammers they met through dating apps or social media platforms.
Moreover, security companies like Sophos have highlighted a concerning trend known as "hog slaughter," where victims lose substantial amounts to fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes, often utilizing decentralized finance (DeFi) applications for extortion.
Scammers are leveraging DeFi protocols to exploit victims' trust, posing a significant risk to individuals who connect their Web3 wallets to malicious contracts. As such scams continue to evolve, vigilance and awareness remain crucial for preventing financial losses in the pursuit of love.
