Mastodon, a rival social media platform to Twitter, experienced a significant increase in traffic following Twitter's implementation of new post-viewing limits based on user verification status. According to Mastodon founder and CEO Eugen Rochko, the platform's active user base surged by at least 110,000 the day after Twitter's restrictions were imposed. Mastodon, a German-based platform, operates on a decentralized model, running through a network of dispersed servers and relying heavily on volunteer contributions.
Rochko expressed gratitude to the Mastodon team for their efforts in managing the increased traffic, even on a Sunday. Longtime users and developers also shared positive feedback, advising new users to curate their feeds actively. Mastodon emphasizes that it provides a user- driven experience unlike Twitter, which utilizes algorithms to populate feeds. As of now, Mastodon reports having 324,000 active users.
The influx of activity on Mastodon follows an announcement by Elon Musk, owner and former CEO of Twitter, regarding new limits on the number of posts users can read per day. Verified Twitter users are now restricted to viewing up to 10,000 posts daily, while new and unverified accounts are limited to 500 posts. Although Musk did not provide specific reasons for the restrictions, he mentioned that the platform has suffered data looting, resulting in a decline in service quality for regular users. The prevalence of fake accounts in various Twitter communities has also been highlighted by recent data.
Mastodon's increased traffic and positive user feedback demonstrate a potential shift towards alternative social media platforms in response to Twitter's limitations. With its decentralized and user-driven approach, Mastodon offers an alternative experience that some users find m ore dynamic and rewarding than what Twitter has provided in recent times.
