On November 17, OpenAI's board of directors made headlines in the tech world by removing founder Sam Altman from his position and appointing Mira Murati as the interim CEO. This sudden move triggered strong backlash from the startup's key customers and investors. Reports suggest that Microsoft, OpenAI's largest shareholder, is actively involved in efforts to reinstate Altman as the CEO, as reported by Bloomberg.
Stepping into the interim CEO role is Murati, who has been associated with OpenAI since 2018. Originally established as a nonprofit research center, the company swiftly transitioned into the business entity behind the renowned chatbot ChatGPT. Murati's career trajectory involved a stint at Goldman Sachs as an analyst, followed by engineering roles at Zodiac Aerospace and Tesla. However, detailed information about her professional journey, obtained from her LinkedIn profile on Women's Agenda, is no longer available.
Her tenure at OpenAI commenced as the vice president of applied artificial intelligence and partnerships, subsequently ascending to senior vice president positions in research, products, partnerships, and eventually becoming the chief technology officer in 2022. With roots in Albania, Murati graduated from Dartmouth College in 2012. Regarded as a "product person," she advocates for expanding the role of artificial intelligence beyond mere research initiatives.
In an interview with Time magazine, Murati emphasized the significance of involving diverse perspectives such as philosophers, social scientists, and artists in the development of AI. She stressed the importance of responsible implementation and the involvement of regulators, governments, and various stakeholders in the AI dialogue. Responsible for spearheading several groundbreaking projects at OpenAI, Murati played a pivotal role in initiatives like DALL-3, Whisper, and the latest iteration of the company's chatbot, GPT-4.
While she maintains an active profile on X, Murati has remained silent publicly since assuming the interim CEO role at OpenAI. Notably, her LinkedIn account is no longer active, and her last social media post on X was made on November 6, coinciding with the launch of ChatGPT Turbo.
