Francis Suarez, the Mayor of Miami and a cryptocurrency-friendly candidate for the 2024 US presidential election, has announced the suspension of his campaign. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 29, Suarez stated that although running for the presidency was a significant honor, he has chosen to end his campaign and will now support a strong nominee from the Republican Party. In June, Suarez had declared his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the 2024 election, but he was not eligible to participate in the initial party debate held on August 23.
Suarez gained attention during his tenure as the Mayor of Miami for his endorsement of cryptocurrency initiatives. He famously announced his acceptance of a portion of his salary in Bitcoin in 2021 and supported the Miami Coin (MIA) token project. Alongside Democrat tic nominee Robert F . Kennedy Jr., Suarez was one of the few candidates in the 2024 race to openly advocate for cryptocurrencies.
In the Republican presidential nomination race, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is trailing behind former President Donald Trump, who, despite skipping the initial party debate, remains a prominent figure. Trump is currently facing state and federal legal challenges for alleged ly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to incumbent President Joe Biden.
The outcome of the 2024 US election could have a significant impact on the legislative landscape for digital assets. The Democratic Party currently holds a narrow majority in the Senate, but a significant number of seats (34 out of 100) will be contested in the next election. On the other hand, Republican lawmakers currently hold a majority in the House, and the fate of all 435 House seats will be determined in the November 2024 elections.
