Microsoft is strengthening its presence in Asia through a fresh collaboration with Indian startup Sarvam AI to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) offerings. Disclosed in a Microsoft blog post on February 8, the tech giant is set to integrate Sarvam's Large Language Model (LLM), designed for Indian speech, into its Azure AI infrastructure. By leveraging Microsoft's Azure OpenAI and machine learning services, Sarvam will host its LL.M., expediting its training and expansion efforts, thus reaffirming Microsoft's commitment to fostering AI-driven growth and innovation in India.
Puneet Chandok, serving as the president of Microsoft India and South Asia, elucidated the company's vision to empower India as an "AI-first nation," stressing Microsoft's pivotal role in nurturing indigenous innovation and envisaging a future where voice-driven AI solutions cater to individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Sarvam's tailored LLM curriculum, catering to the intricacies of Indian languages and contexts, holds significant promise in making applications in India more precise and cost-effective, particularly in accommodating the linguistic diversity prevalent in the country.
Initially, the LLM will offer "natural speech-based interfaces" in Hindi, the predominant language in the Indian subcontinent with an estimated 609 million speakers, predominantly in the Hindi belt region. Microsoft emphasized the superiority of speech-based interfaces for generative AI applications in Indian languages, aligning with the collaboration's objective of facilitating swift and responsible adoption of generative AI solutions among local businesses.
The partnership is also geared towards expediting the adoption of generative AI among local enterprises, fostering an environment conducive to rapid technological uptake. Concurrently, Microsoft has unveiled a skilling initiative in India aimed at equipping 2 million individuals with AI skills by 2025, underscoring its commitment to advancing technological literacy and proficiency in the region. Microsoft's strategic emphasis on AI integration has bolstered its financial performance, with its 2023 year-end earnings witnessing an 18% surge compared to 2022, primarily attributed to the integration of artificial intelligence across its technology spectrum.
In parallel, Microsoft's market valuation has surpassed $3 trillion, surpassing Apple to emerge as the world's most valuable public company. The tech juggernaut has also embarked on partnerships with notable entities such as Vodafone and leading industry groups to nurture the development of "worker-centric" artificial intelligence solutions, signaling its dedication to driving inclusive innovation and fostering societal impact through AI-driven endeavors.
