Microsoft has unveiled a significant investment plan for Europe, earmarking $2.1 billion to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Spain. Following a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Microsoft Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith affirmed the company's commitment to Spain, spanning the next two years. Smith emphasized that beyond merely constructing data centers, the investment aims to contribute to Spain's security, development, and digital transformation across governmental, business, and individual spheres.
This latest pledge builds upon Microsoft's longstanding presence in Spain, where the tech giant has been investing for 37 years. In September 2021, Microsoft announced the establishment of a new research and development center for artificial intelligence technology in Barcelona, Spain. Alberto Granados, President of Microsoft Spain, hailed this investment as a testament to Spain's digital prowess. Moreover, Microsoft recently announced another substantial investment in Europe, allocating €3 billion to bolster Germany's artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Similar to the initiative in Spain, Microsoft's investment in Germany will unfold over the next two years, with a focus on enhancing AI infrastructure, erecting new data centers, and fostering AI skill development among the workforce. The timing of these investments aligns with the impending implementation of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, prompting major tech companies to accelerate their forays into Europe's AI landscape.
In tandem with Microsoft's endeavors, other tech giants are also ramping up their presence in Europe's AI sector. Notably, the French Ministry of Economy, Finance, Industry, and Digital Sovereignty, in collaboration with Google, unveiled plans to establish a dedicated AI center in Paris. This facility will accommodate nearly 300 researchers and engineers, aligning with France's ambitions in artificial intelligence development.
Furthermore, Google recently unveiled its European Artificial Intelligence Opportunity Plan, earmarking €25 million to provide training in AI skills for Europeans. These concerted efforts by industry leaders underscore Europe's growing prominence as a hub for AI innovation and development, with investments pouring into various countries across the continent.
