The Lightning Network has been integrated into the corporate email address of Michael Saylor, the co-founder of bitcoin bull and business intelligence software firm MicroStrategy. In an April 17 tweet, the company’s former CEO shared with his 3 million Twitter followers a screenshot showing others sending Satoshis, or “Sats” (the smallest denomination) to “ saylor@microstrategy.com” for a few bitcoin transactions.
MicroStrategy's integration is enabled by the Lightning Address protocol, which allows users to link "Internet identifiers" such as email addresses without having to duplicate wallet addresses or use QR codes. It's unclear if MicroStrategy has integrated the feature into all of the company's corporate email. The Lightning Network is a popular layer 2 scaling solution for Bitcoin capable of processing 1 million transactions per second (TPS) with a base fee of 1 satoshi (~4 cents).
Saylor, now the company’s executive chairman, has been the mastermind behind MicroStrategy’s bitcoin investment strategy in hopes of strengthening the company’s balance sheet. Since the company began buying in March 2021, MicroStrategy has spent $4.17 billion to accumulate 140,000 BTC. According to Buy Bitcoin Worldwide, the company’s average purchase price is $29,800.
At the current Bitcoin price of $29,400, MicroStrategy’s total investment is down just 1.3%. However, the company was in the green again for a brief period last week when Bitcoin broke through the $30,000 mark.
