Analysts at K33 Research have suggested that the cryptocurrency market could experience negative price pressure on Bitcoin in the near future, potentially due to developments related to the Mt. Gox era. Recent updates on Reddit indicate that some creditors of the now-bankrupt Mt. Gox cryptocurrency exchanges have noticed changes to their claims, sparking speculation that cryptocurrency payments may soon be forthcoming.
These updates include details regarding the amount of cryptocurrency and fiat currency owed to creditors, as well as the projected completion dates for repayments. According to Anders Helseth and Vetle Lunde, analysts at K33 Research, this recent development suggests that creditors might begin receiving Bitcoin returns as early as the upcoming month, based on the legal repayment plan outlined for Mt. Gox's assets, which include over $9.4 billion worth of Bitcoin and $72 million worth of Bitcoin Cash.
While the prospect of Bitcoin returns from Mt. Gox could potentially impact the market, Helseth and Lunde emphasize that the release of these funds may not necessarily result in immediate selling pressure. However, they caution that the surplus of approximately 142,000 BTC and 143,000 BCH could still unsettle market sentiments, leading to heightened volatility in the coming weeks.
The ongoing wait for the return of funds from Mt. Gox has been a prolonged ordeal for creditors, spanning over a decade since the exchange's collapse in February 2014 due to a series of undetected hacks. Despite the trustee's efforts to initiate repayments, including confirming creditors ' identities and exchange accounts for reimbursement, the process has been protracted.
Recent reports have indicated that some creditors have begun receiving fiat repayments, signaling progress in the repayment process. However, the final deadline for base, lump sum, and intermediate repayments from Mt. Gox is slated for October 31, 2024, although this timeline remains subject to potential adjustments as the situation evolves.
