As the Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA/WGA strike enters its second week, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in film and TV production, Netflix is actively seeking AI developers by advertising new product manager and technical director positions in its R &D lab and machine learning department.
Netflix aims to enhance the effectiveness of its machine learning platform with the creation of a new product management position, as stated in the job posting. These positions will be based at Netflix's headquarters in Los Gatos, California, but they also offer the flexibility to work remotely. The salaries for these roles are substantial, ranging from $450,000 to $650,000 for technical directors and $300,000 to $900,000 for product managers.
The rise of artificial intelligence has raised concerns among writers and actors in Hollywood. Writers fear that generative AI tools like ChatGPT could replace their jobs, while actors are troubled by the scanning of their faces and bodies for background characters, raising issues of compensation for the use of their likeness.
The job ad underlines the significant demand for expertise in machine learning and AI, particularly with the rapid development of AI technologies since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November. While both positions require experience in game design and machine learning, it is note worthy that neither role explicitly requires a college degree, as indicated in the Netflix LinkedIn job posting.
Interestingly, the job vacancies were posted last week, coinciding with the collapse of talks between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). As a result, actors have joined the picket line in solidarity with the striking writers, adding another layer of significance during this critical period of contract negotiations in the film and television industry, with both parties expressing their concerns and demands through collective action.
