On December 29, the European Commission revealed its plan to enforce guidelines focusing on the responsible utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) within journalistic practices.
The Intergovernmental Steering Committee on Media and Information Society within the council adopted these guidelines, initially issued on November 30, considering them a vital step toward fostering a public communications sector rooted in the rule of law and aligned with human rights.
"These guidelines offer practical advice to key players, particularly news media organizations, as well as nations, technology providers, and digital platforms involved in disseminating news. They delineate the ways AI systems can be employed to bolster news production," the council highlighted.
Encompassing AI systems across various stages of news production, the guidelines delve into decisions about the initial use of AI, media organizations' acquisition of AI tools, and their integration into newsrooms. Importantly, the guidance also delves into the societal impact of AI on audiences and emphasizes the responsibilities of technology providers, platforms, and member states.
Headquartered in Strasbourg, France, the European Commission comprises 46 European countries and aims to advocate for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. As AI became more prevalent in public usage last year, it prompted diverse reactions within the media landscape.
While Channel 1 AI announced plans to launch an AI-led newsroom by 2024, delivering tailored news content, German media giant Axel Springer disclosed its collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its news operations in mid-December.
Conversely, traditional newsrooms have been grappling with copyright concerns, alleging that AI models are illicitly trained to target media companies' content. A recent lawsuit filed by The New York Times on December 27 against OpenAI and Microsoft underscores this issue, accusing them of misappropriating content in model training.
