During the ongoing criminal trial of former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, Nishad Singh, the former director of engineering at FTX, faced rigorous questioning from Bankman-Fried's legal team. Singh admitted on October 17 that he couldn't recall many details of events that transpired from June to July 2022. Notably, he testified that he was unaware of the software bug that had exaggerated Alameda Research's obligations until he overheard a conversation between former FTX CTO Gary Wang and former FTX developer Adam Yedidia.
The line of questioning also touched on the massive $8 billion breach, which is central to the trial. Singh appeared to lack knowledge of the error until it was discussed, emphasizing the significance of the issue.
These exchanges occurred during the tenth day of Sam Bankman-Fried's trial in New York, where he faces seven charges related to alleged fraud at FTX and Alameda Research. The trial has heard from numerous witnesses, including former Alameda CEO Caroline Ellison, Gary Wang, and Adam Yedidia. Singer, the former director of engineering, revealed his emotional struggles in November 2022 when FTX faced financial difficulties and raised concerns about Alameda's lack of transparency in their use of FTX client funds.
Prosecutors are set to continue calling witnesses to testify regarding Bankman-Fried's alleged misconduct and the events that led to FTX's troubles. This phase of the trial is expected to conclude around October 26 or 27, after which the defense will present its case. Bankman-Fried's first criminal trial is scheduled to conclude in November, although he faces five additional charges in a second trial slated to commence in March 2024, with Bankman-Fried pleading not guilty to all charges.
