Throughout the past year, numerous prominent figures spanning scientists, technology CEOs, billionaires, lawmakers, and now, the Pope, have expressed concerns about artificial intelligence (AI).
In a lengthy 3,412-word letter issued on December 8, Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, cautioned about the potential risks posed by AI to humanity. This warning was released ahead of the church's World Peace Day celebration on January 1, 2024.
Pope Francis emphasized the need for an international treaty regulating AI, urging global cooperation to ensure that its development and application adhere to ethical principles. He warned against a scenario where the pursuit of profit or power in AI development overshadows the fundamental values of freedom and peace.
Highlighting the importance of respecting human dignity in technological advancements, the pope asserted that any technology's progress should align with justice and contribute to fostering peace. He criticized technology that perpetuates inequality and conflict, highlighting the detrimental impact on societal progress.
The pontiff acknowledged AI's positive contributions, such as streamlining manufacturing, improving transportation, and revolutionizing data management. However, he expressed concerns about potential job displacement and economic inequality resulting from AI advancements.
This isn't the first time Pope Francis has raised ethical concerns regarding emerging technologies. While often regarded as more forward-thinking in comparison to his predecessors, he continues to stress the integration of ethical principles into technological advancements.
The Pope's sentiments echo the growing global apprehension over AI's potential hazards, mirrored by influential figures like Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Joe Biden, who have similarly expressed concerns about AI's risks and issued calls for responsible AI development.
Even Hollywood personalities, such as filmmaker James Cameron, have voiced apprehensions about AI's dangers, drawing parallels to his earlier warnings in the iconic movie "The Terminator" and underscoring the potential risks of AI weaponization.
