U.S. Representative Patrick McHenry, known for his cryptocurrency-friendly stance, has been appointed as the interim House Speaker following the removal of U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in a historic vote.
In a vote of 216 to 210. Congress decided to oust McCarthy, marking the first time in U.S. history that a House Speaker has been removed from office. The motion for McCarthy's removal was initiated by Matt Gaetz, one of McCarthy's political opponents, who questioned McCarthy's conflicting promises.
Although McHenry's appointment is temporary, it carries significance for the digital asset industry. The House Speaker plays a crucial role in setting the legislative agenda, controlling committee assignments, and scheduling bills for debate and voting in the House. The Speaker of the House of Representatives is considered one of the most influential positions in the U.S. government, ranking just after the President and Vice President.
McHenry is known for challenging the SEC's mandatory regulatory approach to the cryptocurrency industry. He recently grilled U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler during congressional testimony, accusing him of attempting to stifle the digital asset ecosystem and lacking transparency regarding the SEC's relationship with FTX and its former CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried. McHenry has also released a discussion draft of the Digital Asset Market Structure Proposal, aimed at addressing regulatory gaps in the cryptocurrency space and fostering innovation, a move that received praise from some industry leaders.
However, McHenry's tenure as House Speaker may be short-lived, as a formal vote for a new House Speaker is scheduled for October 11. according to Bloomberg. Speculation suggests that pro-crypto Representative Tom Emmer or even former President Donald Trump could potentially replace McCarthy, although no one has publicly expressed interest in the role.
