On October 17, during a vote among members of the U.S. House of Representatives, no candidate for the position of House speaker received the majority of votes required to secure the role. Jim Jordan, the Republican nominee for House speaker, fell short with 200 votes, failing to reach the 217-vote threshold needed for victory. All 212 House Democrats voted for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, while other Republican votes were distributed among various candidates.
The current speaker pro tempore, Rep. Patrick McHenry, who is a strong supporter of cryptocurrencies and the chairman of the U.S. House Financial Services Committee, continues to temporarily occupy this critical role. Since Republican lawmakers voted to oust Kevin McCarthy on October 4, McHenry holds the position but has limited authority to advance legislation in the House, which essentially paralyzes half of the federal government's legislative branch. The Speaker of the House of Representatives is the second in line of succession to the U.S. President, following President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. However, experts have suggested that this line of succession might not apply to a speaker pro tempore like McHenry.
For cryptocurrency enthusiasts, the current situation in the House represents a significant obstacle to advancing crypto-related bills. McHenry is the head of the House Financial Services Committee, which has shown support for various crypto bills, including the 21st Century Financial Innovation and Technology Act, the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act, the Payment Stablecoins Act, and the Keep Your Coins Act. These legislative initiatives were expected to receive a full vote in the House, but with the current deadlock in the Speaker's position, their passage in the near future appears uncertain.
As of now, it remains unclear when McHenry plans to hold a second vote for the House speaker position. Jim Jordan, despite criticisms related to his support for unproven claims about the 2020 presidential election results, remains the leading Republican candidate, as the party holds the majority in the House, while Democrats are unified behind Hakeem Jeffries.
