Tom Emmer, the current Majority Whip and a supporter of cryptocurrencies, has reportedly abandoned his campaign to become the next Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He ended his bid after failing to secure the necessary 217 Republican votes to win the position. This development left the race for the Speaker of the House open to a broader range of candidates.
Emmer is the third speaker candidate to withdraw from the race due to a lack of Republican support. Following the vote to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy on October 3, both Reps. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise attempted to secure enough votes for the Speakership but were unsuccessful. Rep. Patrick McHenry is currently serving as Speaker Pro Tempore.
Emmer is known for his support of cryptocurrencies and has voiced concerns about financial privacy in the context of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). He has emphasized the nonpartisan nature of digital asset regulation.
Following Emmer's nomination by Republicans, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the decision, calling it a "tragic mistake." This came after Emmer expressed his desire to maintain a strong working relationship with Trump should he become the Speaker.
It remains unclear who the Republicans plan to nominate as the next Speaker at the time of this article's publication. Since October 3, the House of Representatives has been deadlocked over cryptocurrency bills passed by the Financial Services Committee, including the 21st Century Financial Innovation and Technology Act, the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act, and the Payment Stablecoin Clarity Act, among others.
