Boda bodas, the motorcycle taxis ubiquitous in East African cities like Nairobi, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam, serve as a vital mode of transportation and a significant source of income for millions of Africans. Now, this industry is poised for a transformative shift with the integration of blockchain technology for real-time tracking of vehicles financed by asset finance firm Watu. Through a newly announced partnership with Nodle's blockchain-powered decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN), Watu aims to enhance vehicle tracking capabilities for the motorcycles it supports.
With over 1 million Africans benefiting from its loans across seven countries, Watu has been instrumental in enabling individuals to access finance for purchasing motorcycles and operating taxi services. Leveraging Nodle's DePIN infrastructure, Watu seeks to provide real-time location data to vehicles, offering protection against theft and empowering Watu to gain deeper insights into the assets it finances.
Scheduled to launch in Uganda in May 2024, the project will subsequently expand its footprint to Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the following months. The Watu asset location solution will leverage the Nodle Network, a decentralized mobile network where smartphones function as nodes in a secure DePIN environment.
Nodle's DePIN, operating on smartphones, promises extensive coverage and precise tracking capabilities due to the widespread adoption of smartphones and advanced geolocation technologies. Micha Benoliel, co-founder and CEO of Nodle, believes that the collaboration with Watu will accelerate the deployment of the network across Africa, especially considering that smartphones are projected to constitute 88% of mobile connections by 2030.
Gunars Bidins, Head of GPS Tracking at Watu, expressed confidence in Nodle's network, stating that it aligns well with Watu's asset management requirements. Bidins emphasized the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of this collaboration, underscoring its significance in ensuring the security of Watu's expanding asset fleet across Africa. Florent Stroppa, Chief Product Officer at Nodle, sees the partnership with Watu as a testament to the economic and social advantages of DePIN. Stroppa emphasized the agility and affordability of crowdsourcing networks, enabling the rapid deployment of new services, particularly in tracking assets that are often challenging to locate.
