SEC Chairman Gary Gensler's recent reiteration of the SEC's responsibilities in a speech sparked criticism from Ripple's legal representatives and several members within the cryptocurrency community. They lambasted Gensler, citing contradictory behavior in the commission's actions and statements.
During the 2023 Securities Enforcement Forum on November 16, Gensler shared a video of his speech, where he emphasized the importance of government agencies being allies to honest businesses while taking a stand against dishonest practices. Ripple's Chief Legal Officer, Stuart Alderoty, currently engaged in a legal battle with the SEC, responded to Gensler's speech. Alderoty asserted that the SEC chairman's recent comments should undergo fact-checking and accused Gensler of preconceived judgments against cryptocurrencies, filings lawsuit without conducting thorough investigations. He emphasized that Ripple was sued but was never accused of dishonesty, highlighting perceived questionable behavior by the SEC and branding them as "irrelevant" on an international scale.
In addition to Alderoty, various members of the cryptocurrency community also joined in responding to Gensler's video. Erik Voorhees, CEO of ShapeShift, a trading platform, chimed in, stating that Gensler had sued him twice despite his business being ethical. Another community member expressed disappointment, claiming Gensler's vision hasn't materialized and accused the SEC of endorsing a corrupt system, contrary to the chairman's statements promoting integrity.
The responses from Ripple's legal representative and members of the cryptocurrency community illustrate the growing discord and criticism directed at Gensler's remarks, alleging inconsistencies between the SEC's articulated principles and their actual conduct towards the cryptocurrency industry.
