In a brief video presentation, James Wallis, the Vice President of Central Bank Partnerships and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) at Ripple, emphasized the pivotal role that CBDCs play in advancing global financial inclusion. Wallis clarified that financial inclusion strives to extend financial services to individuals worldwide, especially those with modest incomes and lacking connections to financial institutions.
Identifying crucial factors contributing to financial exclusion, Wallis highlighted low income levels and the absence of ties to financial institutions, leading to an absence of credit history. In regions with financial exclusion, banks often operate as commercial entities driven by shareholder interests, presenting challenges in serving individuals with limited resources, as it's complex to generate profits from this demographic.
Wallis advocated for CBDCs as a cost-effective solution to deliver financial services at notably lower costs than traditional methods. He emphasized that CBDCs offer streamlined payment options and the chance to establish credit even without prior connections to financial institutions. This allows individuals to establish credit histories, gain access to borrowing opportunities, and foster the growth of their enterprises. In his conclusion, Wallis hailed CBDC as a transformative innovation poised to tackle the worldwide challenge of financial inclusion.
Ripple is actively collaborating with over 20 central banks globally on CBDC initiatives and functions as a technology partner for Georgia's Digital Lari project's second phase. Furthermore, Ripple is deeply engaged in CBDC partnerships in various regions, including Bhutan, Palau, Montenegro, Colombia, and Hong Kong. Despite its involvement in fostering CBDC innovation, Ripple is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In a nod to its contributions to digital currency progress and sustainability efforts, Ripple received recognition from Currency Research in July for its role in advancing CBDC innovation and promoting best sustainability practices.
