Ripple, a fintech firm known for its involvement in the cryptocurrency XRP, is expanding its regulatory licenses in the United States through the acquisition of Fortress Trust, as announced on September 8.
Fortress Trust specializes in offering regulatory and technical infrastructure services to blockchain organizations. Notably, the company holds a Nevada fiduciary license, which permits it to provide custody services for financial assets. This acquisition supplements Ripple's existing portfolio of licenses, which includes more than 30 money transmission licenses spanning various states in the US, as well as New York's BitLicense, a mandatory requirement for digital currency businesses operating within the state.
Monica Long, President of Ripple, highlighted the significance of licensing in enhancing customer experiences for enterprises. Ripple's announcement emphasized that the technology and licenses held by Fortress Trust align with its business strategies and product development plans.
Ripple's involvement with Fortress Trust dates back to 2022 when it made an initial investment in the company through a seed funding round. The specific financial terms of this latest acquisition were not disclosed. Ripple's CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, expressed his confidence in Fortress Blockchain Technologies, the parent company of Fortress Trust, praising their progress in building a substantial business with recurring revenue, a strong customer base in the crypto sector, and a promising trajectory since their launch in 2021.
Ripple's expansion strategy has been active even in challenging market conditions. In May, Ripple revealed its acquisition of Metaco, a Swiss provider of digital asset custody and tokenization services, for a sum of $250 million. At the start of the year, Ripple executives had foreseen a wave of acquisitions within the cryptocurrency industry during 2023, aimed at filling capability gaps.
In addition to this acquisition, Ripple also expressed intentions to invest in Fortress Blockchain Technologies and its subsidiary, FortressPay. Ripple, known for its global presence, operates in over 55 countries, offering payment services built on blockchain technology.
