Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and Chairman of Tools for Humanity, has proposed a visionary outlook on the transformative potential of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) models, suggesting they could redefine the social economy. In a recent interview on the All-In podcast, Altman discussed the possibility of "computing" becoming a valuable resource akin to monetary income, potentially replacing traditional means of delivering Universal Basic Income (UBI). While exploring various topics, the conversation quickly shifted to the risks posed by AI, including the potential for AI-induced human extinction and job displacement.
Acknowledging the significant capabilities of AI models, Altman emphasized the need for global oversight to mitigate potential risks. He proposed the establishment of an international agency tasked with overseeing the most powerful AI systems and ensuring robust security measures. Altman believes that such oversight would safeguard against AI systems causing significant global harm while allowing startups to innovate without being overly burdened by restrictive regulations.
Altman reassured the All-In team that OpenAI's most advanced production model, GPT-4, does not currently pose a substantial threat to human life. However, he stressed the importance of proactive measures to address potential risks associated with future AI advancements.
Regarding employment, Altman is a vocal advocate for universal basic income (UBI) and leads Tools for Humanity, which operates the Worldcoin cryptocurrency and identity verification platform. Worldcoin distributes tokens to individuals who verify their humanity, offering a monthly stipend thereafter. Altman criticized existing government poverty assistance programs as ineffective and advocated for a simplified approach to UBI, emphasizing the value of giving people financial autonomy.
Altman highlighted the potential of UBI to empower individuals to make better decisions and foster self-sufficiency. While acknowledging that money alone cannot solve all problems or guarantee happiness, Altman believes that UBI could address certain challenges and shift societal attitudes toward self-help. Looking ahead, Altman speculated on the possibility of a paradigm shift from Universal Basic Income to Universal Basic Computing, envisioning a future where individuals receive access to computing resources, potentially transforming how society distributes and utilizes technological assets.
