Sam "SBF" Bankman-Fried, the founder of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, defended his actions in court on October 31, stating that utilizing customers' fiat deposits was part of a broader "risk management" strategy for his cryptocurrency hedge fund, Alameda Research. During his testimony in the trial, when asked by Danielle Sassoon, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, whether he believed FTX customers could spend $8 billion in fiat currency, SBF responded, "I think it's built into risk management." He further emphasized his role as the CEO of Alameda, stating, "As CEO of Alameda, I care about their portfolio. At FTX, I've been paying attention, but not as much as I should have been."
In response to questions regarding his tenure as CEO of FTX and Alameda, SBF claimed that no employees had been terminated during his leadership for allegedly misappropriating $8 billion in client funds for speculative trading. When asked if he knew anything about specific employees, SBF replied, "I don’t recall knowing anything about specific employees."
SBF also revealed that the now-defunct FTX exchange was based in the Bahamas and maintained close ties with the Bahamian government. This disclosure arose during an exchange between SBF and Danielle Sassoon. The U.S. Attorney inquired about an instance where Bankman-Fried had provided a floor-side seat at the Miami Heat Arena to the Prime Minister of the Bahamas. Bankman-Fried seemed uncertain about the details, to which Sassoon reminded him that he had mentioned that the Bahamian Prime Minister and his wife were seated in ringside seats at FTX.
Although SBF denied discussions about repaying Bahamian debt with Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis, he did admit to assisting Davis' son in finding a job. As FTX neared its collapse in November of the previous year, the exchange announced its intention to reinstate Bahamian users and prioritize their withdrawal requests. The trial involving FTX is ongoing and expected to conclude by the end of the coming week.
