Following the launch of the Worldcoin human authentication token on Twitter, which recently changed its name to "X," several fake accounts have emerged, promoting malicious links to users. Despite the rebranding, Twitter's policy of displaying different colored checkmarks accor ding to account type , set to begin in December 2022 under Elon Musk's leadership as CEO, remains unchanged.
The Worldcoin project has been a target for impersonators since its Twitter account's creation in August 2009, gaining a corporate gold checkmark. Numerous fake accounts sporting variations of the Worldcoin logo and name, and at least seven with blue checkmarks, have been attempting to scam users by demanding $8 per month. Some of these accounts have already been suspended by Twitter for falsely claiming to airdrop Worldcoin tokens to their followers. Other pre-existing fake accounts have also increased their tweet frequency since July 24, when the Worldcoin token was launched.
Interestingly, the Worldcoin project itself aims to distinguish real users from bots by utilizing retinal scans for authentication. The project had already garnered over 2 million sign-ups before its official launch, with the ambitious goal of reaching over 2 billion users worldwide. Worldcoin co -founder Sam Altman has reported that since the token's launch, iris scans are being used to verify a new person every 8 seconds.
