U.S. securities regulators have opted to delay a decision regarding the New York Stock Exchange's proposal to introduce options trading on spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs. This postponement, as outlined in an April 8 filing, impacts potential options trading on assets such as the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) and the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), among others, all listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stated that a longer timeframe is necessary to thoroughly assess the proposed rule changes, setting the next deadline for action on May 29.
This delay follows a similar move by securities regulators regarding Nasdaq last month, where options trading on BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) was also deferred. Options, which are financial derivatives, offer traders leverage and the ability to speculate on market directions. For instance, a trader anticipating a rise in Bitcoin's price can purchase a "call option" at a premium, agreeing to acquire 1 BTC at current prices in the future, potentially yielding profits if the price increases.
Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein joined others in advocating for approval of the rule change, highlighting that options trading on spot Bitcoin ETFs has already been greenlit by the SEC for other exchanges. In a letter dated February 28, Sonnenshein emphasized that with the approval of Bitcoin futures ETFs and spot Bitcoin ETFs on the New York Stock Exchange, the logical progression would be to approve options trading on spot Bitcoin ETFs as well.
In a post on February 5, Sonnenshein further emphasized the potential benefits of approving options trading on spot Bitcoin ETFs, arguing that it would contribute to the development of a robust and vibrant market. The New York Stock Exchange initially proposed options trading on a Bitcoin ETF on January 12, with Nasdaq and the Chicago Board Options Exchange following suit on January 19. These proposals emerged shortly after the SEC's approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF on multiple stock exchanges, signaling a dynamic shift in the regulatory landscape.
