Despite the recent drop in cryptocurrency prices and indications of waning excitement surrounding Bitcoin NFTs (non-fungible tokens), ordinal inscriptions have continued to dominate the activity on the Bitcoin network in the past week.
On August 21, the developer known as "Leonidas," behind the Ordinals project, pointed out that there were 530,788 transactions on the Bitcoin network in the preceding 24 hours, with 450,785 of them linked to Ordinals. significant 84.9% of the overall Bitcoin activity during that time. Data from Dune Analytics corroborates this trend, recording more than 400,000 ordinal inscriptions on August 20. Additionally, Bitinfocharts reports a daily Bitcoin transaction count of approximately 556, 000.
Consequently, over three-quarters of the recent web activity appears to be tied to ordinal inscriptions around August 20. Industry researcher Eric Wall also chimed in, noting that around 54% of transactions on the Bitcoin network during that week were ordinal transactions. Ac cording to Dune, the Bitcoin network has seen a total of 25.5 million ordinal inscriptions, generating $53.4 million in fees.
The focus of these inscriptions primarily centers on minting BRC-20 tokens, with 1.9 million of these tokens minted in the past week. This current observation contradicts a report from DappRadar on August 17, which stated that the usage and sales of Ordinals NFTs had decreased Since their peak in May. This had led some cryptocurrency observers to speculate that the hype around Ordinals had subsided. However, it's important to note that this report tracked the sales and transaction volumes of minted NFTs on the Bitcoin network, rather than the actual in script activity, which still appears to be robust.
Bitcoin ordinals are unique digital artifacts that allow data to be written onto the smallest unit of Bitcoin, known as a Satoshi. The protocol was introduced in January, and the frenzy around inscription activity gained momentum in the following months, resulting in congestion and surges in Transaction fees, especially in April and May.
