The Solana Foundation, the nonprofit of the Solana Network, disclosed a security incident involving its email service provider, Mailchimp, on Jan. 14.
The email sent to users says Mailchimp notified the foundation on January 12, 2023 that "an unauthorized actor has accessed and exported certain user data from the Solana Foundation's Mailchimp instance."
According to the Solana Foundation, "Based on information we have received from Mailchimp, the affected information may include, inter alia, email addresses, names and Telegram usernames, in each case only if the user provides any such information The incident did not affect passwords or credit card information,” Mailchimp said.
However, the users affected by this incident are still unclear so far. As of press time, there has been no official announcement from Solana or Mailchimp regarding the event.
It must be noted that this is not the first time a cryptocurrency company has had security concerns with Mailchimp. Back in August 2022, Mailchimp suspended its service to crypto content creators and platforms related to crypto news updates. Additionally, users started experiencing issues logging into their accounts and were subsequently notified of a service outage. Mailchimp then stated that "across the technology industry, malicious actors are increasingly deploying a range of sophisticated phishing and social engineering tactics to target data and information from companies involved in encryption"
It further stated, "In response to the recent attacks against Mailchimp's encryption-related users, we have taken the proactive step of temporarily suspending account access to accounts in which we detected suspicious activity while we further investigate the incident".
Earlier this month, a Solana executive said that despite the FTX crash, the platform was still attracting new users. Austin Federa, head of strategy and communications at the Solana Foundation, said the demise of cryptocurrency exchange FTX hasn’t stopped the Solana network from attracting users and developers.
