The battle between the music industry and AI continues, with reports that Spotify is outlawing AI-generated music.
The music streaming platform removed 7% of all songs, or "tens of thousands" of songs, written by AI music startup Boomy, according to a Financial Times report.
Spotify is also said to be stepping up its insight of the platform depending on the situation.
This comes after Spotify and other streaming services started receiving complaints about fraud and confusion on the platform. Music industry giant Universal Music Group (UMG) has warned streaming service providers about "suspicious streaming activity" on Boomy tracks, According to FT sources.
Spotify Commented: "Artificial Streaming is a long-standing foundry-wide problem, and Spotify is working hard to eliminate. E for Boomy Said The Platform "Strongly Opposes" All Manipuration or Artificial Streaming of Any Kind. Universal Music Group CEO Lucian Grainge commented to investors:
"The recent explosion of generative artificial intelligence, if left unchecked, will increase the deluge of unwanted content on platforms and create rights issues with existing copyright laws." Last month, UMG emailed streaming services including Spotify, asking them to block AI services from accessing music catalogs for training purposes. UMG also sent requests "left and right" to remove AI-generated songs from the platform.
While music industry giants are working to rein in artificial intelligence, other artists like Grimes are backing the technology. The musician allows creators to use her voice and becomes a "guinea pig" for the AI's music creation, as long as it abides by a small set of rules and shares royalties.
