Starknet, an Ethereum layer 2 scaling protocol, is set to distribute its native network token, STRK, starting February 20. Ethereum stakers will be among the recipients of these tokens, with approximately 1.3 million eligible wallets identified. This includes Ethereum independent and liquid stakers, Starknet developers and users, as well as participants from outside the Web3 ecosystem.
As a pioneering Ethereum layer 2 solution, Starknet utilizes zero-knowledge rollup (ZK-rollup) technology. This approach enables off-chain processing of transactions and smart contract functions, with cryptographic proofs submitted to Ethereum to leverage the security assurances of the underlying blockchain.
The Starknet Foundation has outlined the distribution plan for STRK tokens, emphasizing the allocation of over 700 million tokens across nine categories. Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and CEO of StarkWare, highlights the goal of prioritizing Starknet users, contributors, and developers. These tokens will serve various functions, including governance participation, fee payments, and potential future staking.
Ben-Sasson underscores the intent to empower individuals to engage with the Starknet ecosystem through activities such as experimentation, application development, and participation in staking. Notably, the distribution considers verifiable past activity, including interactions with decentralized applications (DApps) powered by Stark-based technology.
The Starknet Foundation aims to foster inclusivity within the broader development space by extending token eligibility to Ethereum community members, open source developers, and contributors to the Ethereum ecosystem. Additionally, measures are being implemented to mitigate potential risks associated with airdrop scams, with the team emphasizing caution among potential recipients. Moreover, plans are in place to allocate a portion of network fees to developers through the "Devonomics" pilot program, further incentivizing participation and innovation within the Starknet ecosystem.
