A government investigation in Sweden has unveiled significant tax discrepancies among cryptocurrency mining companies, resulting in a collective debt exceeding $90 million. Over the course of four years, the Swedish tax agency Skatteverket scrutinized the operations of 21 cryptocurrency mining entities, spanning from 2020 to 2023. Among these, 18 companies were found to have provided incomplete or deceptive information to exploit tax loopholes.
The investigation brought to light various tactics employed by cryptocurrency mining firms to evade taxes. Some companies resorted to providing misleading descriptions of their operations, aiming to circumvent value-added tax (VAT) obligations on taxable activities. Additionally, certain entities devised strategies to bypass import levies on mining equipment and income taxes related to mining revenue.
In response to these findings, the Swedish Tax Agency released a statement highlighting the adverse impact of such practices on the country's tax revenue. It outlined the disappearance of tax funds through erroneously paid input VAT, unreported crypto assets, and unpaid output VAT. The total sum owed by cryptocurrency mining companies to tax authorities amounts to over 990 million Swedish kronor, encompassing unpaid VAT and surcharges.
Despite the appeals lodged by cryptocurrency mining firms against the tax agency's claims, the Administrative Court upheld the appeals of only two companies while dismissing the rest. Consequently, adjustments were made to the amounts owed in accordance with the court's judgment.
In November 2023, Hive Digital Technologies, a prominent cryptocurrency mining company, expanded its operations in Sweden by acquiring a commercial property and data center in Boden. This strategic move, according to Hive Sweden President Johanna Thornblad, aims to bolster the company's regional presence while reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency through the utilization of green energy data centers. The newly acquired property is slated to accommodate advanced ASIC servers, facilitating an increase in Bitcoin production.
Hive Digital Technologies operates data center facilities across Canada, Sweden, and Iceland, advocating for the adoption of environmentally friendly practices in cryptocurrency mining. Their focus on utilizing green energy aligns with efforts to mitigate the environmental impact associated with digital asset mining.
