Renowned US venture capitalist Tim Draper has issued a warning through social media about scammers attempting to exploit artificial intelligence (AI) voice generators to deceive cryptocurrency users. In an October 19 post on X, previously known as Twitter, Draper alerted his nearly 254,000 followers to remain vigilant against "thieves" employing AI to mimic his voice. He emphasized that "artificial intelligence is becoming more sophisticated," citing instances where followers reported that they had received messages purportedly from Draper, urging them to send cryptocurrencies.
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have enabled scammers to create convincing audio and video impersonations of notable figures. These deepfake technologies have been used to disseminate fraudulent content involving celebrities, politicians, and business leaders. For instance, after the November 2022 FTX exchange crash, scammers created a deepfake video impersonating former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, promising compensation to affected users. A similar situation occurred in May 2022 when a deepfake video featuring Tesla CEO Elon Musk emerged.
Tim Draper is an early investor in cryptocurrencies and is widely recognized for his bullish stance on Bitcoin. He previously predicted that Bitcoin's market capitalization would reach $250,000 by 2023. Draper's commitment to the digital asset space remained strong, even after losing around 40,000 BTC due to the collapse of the Mt. Gox exchange in 2011.
Draper's warning serves as a cautionary note for cryptocurrency users in an era where AI technology is increasingly being harnessed by scammers to create sophisticated impersonations and fraudulent schemes. Staying vigilant and verifying the authenticity of messages and requests in the crypto space has become crucial to avoid falling victim to such deceptive tactics.
