Twitter is expanding its web3 strategy with a beta product that will enable users to share call-to-action (CTA)-enabled NFTs and collectibles on the platform. The company will use a feature called Tweet Tiles, which has been tested in a pilot project with leading news publishers.
The company launched a pilot product in August, allowing leading news and media platforms The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Guardian to test the feature.
But now, the social media company is now looking to partner with OpenSea, Rarible, Magic Eden, Dapper Labs and GuardianLink’s Jump.trade marketplace to bring the feature to the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
NFTs are digital representations of JPEGs, music tracks, collectibles, video clips or artwork stored on the blockchain. Since the beginning of last year, NFTs have become popular with the influx of celebrities and mainstream fashion brands.
The industry has also attracted strong backing from venture capital investors, including A16z Crypto, SoftBank Vision 2 Fund, Polygon Studios, Binance Labs, OpenSea Ventures, and more.
The partnership will allow Twitter to roll out the feature to NFT collectors, allowing them to share CTA-enabled collectibles on the platform. Tweets will also contain NFT metadata, including the name of the NFT/collection and creator.
The pilot run allowed featured partners to showcase colorful NFTs on Twitter for the first time. If successful, Twitter plans to roll out the feature to the expanded NFT community.
The announcement comes a few months after the social media company launched NFT profile pictures, enabling collectors to use NFT JPEGs as their avatars. Users verify ownership of their NFTs by connecting to their web wallets.
Tweet tiles will enable developers and collectors to extend the NFT experience by creating mobile-centric posts and enhanced visual displays.
Meta Platforms recently rolled out a similar feature to 100 countries, allowing users to share their NFTs and collectibles on Instagram and Facebook. The company has partnered with NFT wallet provider Coinbase and Dapper Labs' Flow.
"The ability to embed NFTs along with related information and direct market links will drive sales and support the discovery of new trending series," the company wrote in a Thursday release.
The Tweet Tile feature is already enabled for five NFT marketplaces on the web and iOS.
