Unstoppable Domains, a Web3 username protocol, has recently introduced a novel group chat feature as per their announcement on January 17. This new functionality permits owners of usernames to create group chats that are badge-gated. Essentially, only wallet accounts possessing specific attributes are granted access to these chats. Developed using the Web3 communication system push protocol, Unstoppable Domains essentially enables wallet holders to register easily remembered names that correspond to specific wallet accounts, eliminating the need for sharing lengthy account strings.
In August, Unstoppable Domains debuted a chat application that leverages these Web3 usernames as chat identifiers. Initially, the app facilitated only one-on-one communications, lacking the capability for group messaging that platforms like Discord and Telegram offer. However, as of the recent announcement on January 17, group chat has been integrated into both the mobile and web versions of the Unstoppable Domains app. Group administrators now have the option to restrict group membership to individuals who possess certain "badges," reflecting verifiable on-chain attributes.
The concept of badge-gating is intended to curb the spread of misinformation within the crypto community by establishing a private and decentralized communication channel for verified community members and project teams. Sandy Carter, COO of Unstoppable Domains, explained in a discussion how this mechanism functions. Group administrators can utilize various blockchain standards to automate group membership, such as granting access based on the ownership of a certain number of non-fungible tokens or completion of a specific course.
While this system enables automatic membership for eligible participants, there is also a provision for manual intervention. Administrators have the authority to remove individuals who breach set rules, ensuring that they maintain complete control over the group's membership and messaging activities.
Upon the launch of this group chat feature, over 400 groups were automatically formed based on existing Unstoppable Domains badges. The app's interface displays a variety of groups, including those for major domain collectors (whales), CryptoKitties holders, Yat holders, and others. It's important to note that even if a user possesses a relevant badge, they won't automatically receive messages from the corresponding group. Users are required to opt-in through a specific button in the app to start receiving messages from these badge-specific groups.
