The Volkswagen Group has recently launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) entity named "AI Lab," with a primary focus on establishing partnerships within the broader tech industry and developing digital prototypes for its vehicles. According to Volkswagen's press release, AI Lab aims to collaborate with technology companies, simplify organizational and cultural collaboration, and create enhanced product experiences by connecting cars to external digital ecosystems. Volkswagen-Porsche CEO Oliver Blume emphasized the company's commitment to providing customers with tangible value through artificial intelligence.
One of the key aspirations of AI Lab is to explore the integration of vehicles with external systems, potentially indicating a shift toward combining existing driver assistance software with external infrastructure. While the pursuit of fully autonomous vehicles has been ongoing for the past five years, achieving complete autonomy remains a complex challenge. Experts suggest that addressing this challenge may involve connecting vehicles to external infrastructure, possibly through equipping them with hardware and AI software for interactions with traffic signals, roads, and other vehicles.
The announcement highlights the importance of collaboration with technology companies in the areas of vehicle-to-vehicle communications, infotainment, predictive maintenance, and advanced charging technology. Michael Steiner, Volkswagen's head of research and development, indicated that AI Lab would have the autonomy to independently engage in agreements with technology firms, focusing on rapid prototyping to expedite the integration of AI solutions into production. The company has already initiated discussions with potential partners for the development of its initial products, demonstrating its commitment to advancing AI applications in the automotive sector.
