Samuel Bankman-Fried is an American businessman, investor, and millionaire who goes by the initials SBF. He is the creator and CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX and its American subsidiary, FTX.US. The exchange had over a million users as of February 2022. How did he get rich?
Sam Bankman-Fried, the creator of FTX exchange and Alameda Research, has made a fortune over the past three years, largely through cryptocurrency investments, according to New York Magazine.
SBF, as he is referred to in the crypto community, spoke with the journal about his entry into the sector in 2018. He assessed his own net worth at $10 billion during the conversation, the majority of it in illiquid assets.
After spotting large arbitrage opportunities in 2018, the former Wall Street quant trader entered the cryptocurrency market. He devised a strategy to profit on the "Kimchi premium," or difference in Bitcoin prices between Korea and the rest of the globe.
Due to regulations, he was forced to leave Korea and relocate to Japan, where he moved up to $25 million every day through middlemen and regional banks at the height of the pricing disparity, according to the article.
His crypto business, which is housed under the Alameda Research brand, currently generates $2 billion daily, giving it tremendous market influence. The FTX crypto derivatives market and the DeFi project Serum built on the Solana blockchain are the current areas of focus for SBF.
The FTX Token (FTT) increased by over 100% in January as the exchange outperformed BitMEX and Deribit in terms of open interest. Just recently did it reach an all-time high of $13.60.
Following billionaire Michael Bloomberg, SBF was the second-largest contributor ($5.2 million) to Joe Biden's presidential election campaign in November of last year. He asserts that the Biden team's "general stability and decision-making process" served as the driving force behind the transaction. Prediction markets are another service provided by FTX, which recently launched a Wall Street Bets index that includes GME, AMC, and DOGE. On election night, almost $100 million was wagered on the exchange.
SBF, a self-described workaholic, likens his own memory to computer RAM;
The bean bags have the added benefit of keeping my mind in work mode if I sleep in the workplace, which saves me from having to reload everything the following day.
