The world of Web3 opens up new opportunities for individuals to participate in a more open and transparent Internet and create wealth. However, despite the potential benefits of this emerging technology, women face unique challenges in the Web3 space. From a lack of diversity in the industry to gender bias in funding, women encounter significant barriers that make it harder for them to thrive on the decentralized web.
To better understand these challenges, Cointelegraph interviewed several women at Web3. Devon Martens, lead blockchain engineer at Sweet NFTs, shared her observation that the crypto industry, like many other tech and financial industries, is dominated by men. This lack of representation can be a barrier to entry for women who might consider themselves irrational, Martens noted.
Martens shared that when looking at new Web3 companies and their management, she rarely sees women in the C-suite, noting: "It's hard to pursue something as a concept, it feels a bit more realistic when you see people who are already in these roles. That's why it's so important to talk about what we can do to develop talent across the board, including encouraging women into this field."
Likewise, Sandy Carter, COO and head of business development at Unstoppable Domains, noted that women make up only 12.7% of the Web3 workforce, highlighting the need for greater diversity within the industry. In her experience, there is a significant gender gap among job applicants. Carter shared: "When I announced that I was joining Unstoppable Domains, I included a link to apply for other positions at the company. I was impressed that only 3% of the applicants for that job were women, out of 1,500+ applications."
Briana Marbury, CEO of the Interledger Foundation, discussed the issue of gender stereotypes in the crypto industry, noting that the field is often considered male-dominated and is characterized by a strong "bro culture" that does not welcome anyone who is not part of the industry. The people of the industry are the "pale-faced male" crowd. Unfortunately, this stereotype can prevent women from participating in the field. Marbury added: "People, especially women, often self-deny themselves from pursuing potentially lucrative, rewarding and purposeful career paths in cryptocurrency or technology more broadly because they believe 'it's not for people like them'. Intentionality is the key here. There needs to be a lot of intention in the crypto space when it comes to turning old tropes into new and inclusive narratives.”
Diversity is critical in technology development, said Daniela Barbosa, executive director of the Hyperledger Foundation. “Study after study shows that diversity created by technology produces better outcomes and stronger technology diverse communities are just stronger communities,” she says. However, she also acknowledges that exclusionary behavior can It is a challenge for the crypto industry to influence the culture of the community.
Barbosa emphasized that the crypto industry is very focused on developers and finance/traders two communities that are unfortunately still underrepresented by women. “I still see a lot of toxic behavior in the cryptocurrency space that involves offensive language and insinuations towards specific groups or individuals,” she shared. This toxic behavior further deters women from entering the industry, creating a double whammy when it comes to gender inclusivity in the blockchain and crypto space.
The lack of gender diversity in the industry is a pressing issue. As Barbosa points out, diversity leads to better outcomes, and exclusion of any group hinders progress and innovation. Creating a more inclusive culture that supports and encourages women to pursue careers in the Web3 industry is critical.
Gender diversity and inclusion need to be promoted in the Web3 space to create a more dynamic, innovative and thriving industry. By taking conscious steps to address the unique challenges women in the industry face, the ecosystem can help ensure that Web3 is a welcoming space for all to visit.
