In March, various initiatives within the web3 space were launched to honor and amplify the accomplishments of women, coinciding with Women’s History Month. Instituted in 1987, this annual observance serves to spotlight the significant contributions women have made to society over time. Monica Talán, the founder and contributor to CryptoConexión, a Spanish-language web3 platform, emphasized to Cryptonews that the focus on women in web3 transcends achieving gender parity alone.
Rather, Talán believes that elevating the visibility of women in web3 will broaden the talent pool within the field, introducing fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. She asserts that such efforts are instrumental in fostering more equitable economic opportunities, fostering inclusive communities, and ensuring that technological advancements cater to the needs of all individuals. This perspective becomes particularly vital given that, as of 2023, women hold only around 26% of jobs in the cryptocurrency industry, with a mere 6% occupying senior leadership roles, while 94% of CEOs are male.
According to Talán, the audience of CryptoConexión is comprised of 47% females, indicating a noteworthy degree of diversity on the platform. She suggests that achieving this diversity necessitates a shift from the notion that women must adapt to web3 to the understanding that web3 itself must evolve to embrace women. Concurrently, the Metaverse has emerged as a popular platform for events focused on female participation.
Kim Currier, the head of marketing at the Decentraland Foundation, informed Cryptonews that Decentraland will spotlight talented women in art during its second annual Art Week and MESHfair, scheduled from March 26 to 29. Currier emphasized that MESHfair offers artists a unique virtual environment to explore and showcase their creativity, with 16 out of 32 international artists selected being female.
Bay Backner, an artist and web3 producer who founded MESHfair, underscored its role in connecting artists working in virtual reality (VR) 3D formats with galleries and collectors. Backner highlighted the underrepresentation of VR artwork in traditional art fairs and NFT collections, where only 13.7% of living artists represented by European and North American galleries are women.
However, Backner noted that a gender gap persists in the virtual reality space, attributed in part to the lack of female-led Metaverse companies. McKinsey reports that only 10% of virtual world companies receiving funding during the cryptocurrency boom from 2017 to 2022 were led by women. Consequently, Backner emphasized the importance of MESHfair in enhancing discoverability and amplifying the work of female entrepreneurs and creatives in virtual reality.
In line with this perspective, Backner stressed that MESHfair plays a crucial role in supporting a burgeoning community of creators pioneering immersive web3 technologies. Each artist participating in MESHfair contributes to defining a new artistic medium, making it imperative for female artists to be prominently featured. Female artist “JaneDAO” expressed her enthusiasm for showcasing her work during MESHfair and Women’s History Month, highlighting the platform's capacity to inspire and spark essential conversations about the role of women in shaping the future of technology and the arts.
