Worldcoin has recently initiated its identity verification services in Singapore, following a reduction of its operations in India. In a blog post dated December 27, Worldcoin announced that its iris-scanning orbs would now be accessible at five locations across Singapore. This expansion comes despite the temporary suspension of its services in India just before the Singapore launch.
As per the latest information on Worldcoin’s website, the company has set up verification sites in 11 countries, including the United States. However, certain countries like Kenya have put the project on hold due to privacy concerns. Worldcoin began its identity verification process in 2021, and by the time of its official launch in July 2023, over 2 million people had registered. Currently, Worldcoin reports that over 5 million individuals have created accounts, which constitutes about 0.06% of the global population.
In a related development, Sam Altman, the founder of Worldcoin and the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, was compelled to leave his position at the AI research organization in November. This decision led to a series of resignations by his colleagues at OpenAI in protest, resulting in Altman's reinstatement after 12 days.
