The cryptocurrency initiative Worldcoin, which utilizes iris scanning for user identification, has introduced a feature allowing unverified customers to retain their Worldcoin (WLD) tokens. The project recently announced on August 11 that its World App now incorporates a pre-order option, enabling individuals to pre-order WLD tokens without first undergoing the verification process for their World ID. These reservations will remain valid for a 12-month period, and users can subsequently redeem their reserved World Tokens by using an iris-scanning device known as the Orb.
The Worldcoin project encompasses three main components: the Worldcoin ID, the Worldcoin application, and the Worldcoin Token (WLD). Those who opt to create an ID through iris scanning, thereby participating in the biometric data-based identification system, will be rewarded with native WLD tokens. Following three years of development, Worldcoin was launched on July 24. The project's ambitious vision involves establishing a global human database to distinguish individuals from robots in an AI-driven future.
Worldcoin's concept rests on the assumption that the prominence of artificial intelligence will complicate the differentiation between real individuals and bots online. Thus, the World ID system aims to become the default identification method for humans seeking access to various services. The project has generated attention for Its audacious claims and ambitions, drawing parallels to science fiction narratives like Black Mirror. However, the project's operations have encountered investigations and regulatory challenges. Initial operations in Kenya were halted due to concerns about Worldcoin's data collection methods, particularly its collection of sensitive identity information like iris scans in exchange for digital IDs.
Beyond the suspension in Kenya, the project is also grappling with regulatory actions in Argentina and the United Kingdom. Despite garnering more than 2 million customers before its public launch, the response following the launch has been somewhat lackluster. While the exact number of users claiming WLD tokens has not been disclosed, the project's creators noted that the response to the pre-order queues has been encouraging.
