Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency and digital identification project, has achieved a milestone with over 2 million users signed up for its "global identity protocol" called World ID. The project aims to provide users with a digital passport stored on their phones, allowing them to prove their identity while ensuring privacy through the use of zero-knowledge proofs. The World ID program, still in beta testing, reached the 2 million mark in less time than it took to reach its first million.
To enroll in the World Identity program and obtain a digital passport, individuals need to visit a sphere to scan one of their eyeballs, creating a unique identifier called "IrisHash" to verify their uniqueness. Users who successfully upload sensitive biometric data are rewarded ed with the Worldcoin cryptocurrency. Worldcoin credits its rapid registration growth to a multi-city tour across Barcelona, Berlin, and Tokyo, which has been averaging 40,000 new verified World ID members per week.
Worldcoin anticipates increased global adoption of its eye-scanning devices known as "Orbs" in the coming months due to rising demand. As more people sign up, more apps and services are adopting the World ID protocol. Other protocols, such as Okta's Autho and Talent Protocol, have started utilizing World ID and Worldcoin in their onboarding programs. In addition, Worldcoin launched the World App, a gas-free crypto wallet for verified humans, on Android and iOS operating systems. The project secured $115 million in a Series C Funding round on May 25 to support the further expansion of the World ID program.
