Amid escalating privacy concerns, Argentine authorities have initiated an investigation into the cryptocurrency project Worldcoin. The Argentine Agency for Access to Public Information (AAIP) revealed its inquiry on August 8, specifically focusing on the collection, storage, and utilization of customer data by Worldcoin . The AAIP aims to ascertain whether the project adheres to security and privacy regulations.
Worldcoin, which was launched in July, employs retinal scans to verify user identities, a process that has raised significant privacy apprehensions. In response, the AAIP highlighted citizens' rights to transparent and comprehensive information regarding the collection, us age, and purpose of their provided data. This is especially crucial for sensitive data, including biometric information.
The project witnessed over 2 million account sign-ups prior to its launch, yet concerns grew as the retina scanners were distributed. German authorities launched an investigation into privacy concerns, while France's National Commission for Informatics and Liber ties criticized the project's data collection methods as " problematic." Kenya also halted Worldcoin's local operations temporarily to assess potential risks to residents, and later, Kenyan police conducted a raid on a Worldcoin property and seized devices possibly containing user data.
As governments globally grapple with the implications of cutting-edge technologies like biometric data usage and cryptocurrency projects, Worldcoin's privacy-related challenges are drawing significant attention and regulatory scrutiny.
