The business account of social media platform X recently unveiled a forthcoming feature empowered by artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at advertisers.
In a May 10 announcement, the platform revealed the impending launch of the "AI Audience" function. This feature enables advertisers to provide a brief description of their target audience for a specific ad, allowing X's AI systems to swiftly generate a pool of "X users most relevant" to that target. For instance, advertisers can input a target audience like "tech leaders" and describe it as "users of technology leaders." Within seconds, the AI generates a list of hundreds of users fitting the specified criteria, accompanied by demographic insights.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, retweeted the post without additional commentary on the development.
In response to the original post, one user hailed the feature as a potential "game changer" for the advertising realm, deeming it "worth every penny." However, concerns were raised about the accuracy of AI in targeting precise audiences.
If AI becomes adept at identifying target audiences accurately over time, this move could position X ahead of other platforms in terms of advertising capabilities, as other platforms still rely on manual research to target audiences effectively.
Nevertheless, some users expressed apprehension about AI potentially reinforcing biases and stereotypes. Another user questioned the ethical implications of X's utilization of AI in advertising, pondering what exactly the platform was selling and to whom.
Despite skepticism from some quarters, many users lauded the development as "exciting" and "very clever." This announcement aligns with Musk's ongoing efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into social media platforms, with recent advancements including the availability of X's AI model Grok to Premium subscribers and the release of Grok-1.5, boasting enhanced reasoning capabilities and expanded context length.
Amid a lawsuit between Musk and OpenAI, Musk announced his intention to make Grok open source, underscoring his commitment to advancing AI accessibility. Despite reports suggesting significant investment in Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI, Musk refuted claims of reaching a $500 million milestone toward a $1 billion investment target earlier this year.
