How Do Hackers Secretly Mine on Your Computer?

According to a new report from cybersecurity firm Trend Micro, cybercriminals have developed a new method to steal cryptocurrency from unsuspecting victims.

In several Asian and South American countries, including Brazil, India, Bangladesh, and Kuwait, crypto thieves are now using a malware dropper to hide malicious code on users' computers, allowing them to mine cryptocurrency without the users' knowledge.

The effectiveness of this new malware is partly due to the fact that the code hidden by the dropper is not malicious on its own. Instead, it requires a series of commands to be executed in order to mine cryptocurrency. This code remains in an inactive state On the target's computer, remaining undetected through a process known as "hollowing." Attackers can then issue commands at will, causing the code to mine Monero, a popular cryptocurrency known for its anonymity, and send it to a wallet under their control.

The report explains that the dropped file is only made up of skeletal code with no behavior on its own, allowing it to stay undetected in the system, even when dormant. Attackers have the ability to activate the malware at specific times.

This method is another form of cryptojacking, which involves the malicious hijacking of a computer's processing power to mine and steal cryptocurrency. Trend Micro's report indicates an increase in mining malware in 2019. coinciding with the surge in prices of digit al assets, particularly Bitcoin. However , despite the emergence of new cryptojacking methods, the number of detected cases of illicit crypto mining has significantly declined.

These findings align with a report by cybersecurity firm Check Point, which also suggested a decline in cryptojacking attacks. According to Check Point's research, the number of cryptojacking attacks in the first half of 2019 dropped from 42 percent to about 26 percent compared to the same period in 2018.

The technique mentioned in the text is known as a "malware dropper." The malware dropper itself is not malicious, but it requires a series of commands to be executed to initiate the mining process. The code remains dormant and undetected on the target's computer until activated by the attackers. This technique allows them to covertly mine cryptocurrency, specifically Monero, and send the mined coins to a wallet under their control. The technique exploits the unsuspecting users' computing power for unauthorized mining activities.

How to Prevent Malware Droppers?

To prevent malware dropper attacks and safeguard your computer, follow these key measures. First, install reputable antivirus and anti-malware software, keeping it updated and performing regular system scans. Second, ensure your operating system and software are always up to date with the latest security patches to address known vulnerabilities. Exercise caution when handling email attachments and downloading files, especially from unknown or suspicious sources.

Activate your computer's firewall to create a barrier against potential threats. Practice safe browsing habits by avoiding suspicious links and pop-ups that may lead to malicious websites. Be wary of social engineering techniques and never share personal information or take immediate action prompted by unsolicited messages , emails, or phone calls.

Use strong, unique passwords for your accounts and avoid reusing them. Regularly backup your important data to external storage or a cloud-based service to mitigate the impact of a malware infection or data loss.

Stay informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and best practices. By remaining vigorous and educating yourself, you can recognize and avoid potential risks more effectively.

Implementing these preventive measures and maintaining a proactive approach to cybersecurity significantly reduces the risk of falling victim to malware dropper attacks, ensuring the protection of your computer and data.

Bottom Line

In this article, we will discuss how do hackers secretly mine on your computer. The method is used by cybercriminals to hide malicious code on users' computers in order to mine cryptocurrency without the users' knowledge.
