The newly released generation of Nvidia graphics cards, the RTX 3000 series, is apparently twice as fast as the previous generation. So, how much can a 3080 mine a day?

How Much Can a 3080 Mine a Day?

While it was first believed that the cards would only be a small boost, recent data appears to confirm that they might achieve hash rates of about 100 Megahashes per second for mining Ethereum and Ethash.

In comparison to many of the top-of-the-line cards now being sold on the market by both Nvidia and AMD, this would be an improvement of more than two times. A mining calculator estimates that with light improvements, the AMD RX Vega series, Nvidia's RTX 2000 series, and 5700 series all range between 40 and 50 MH/s.

Nvidia RTX 3080 Vs Radeon 5700 XT

It is worth making a direct comparison between the RTX 3080 and its closest competitor from AMD, the Radeon 5700 XT. The 5700 XT costs about $400, whereas the 3080 can be purchased for between $600 and $700. The AMD hashes at around 51 MH/ s, while the Nvidia card is expected to reach at least 90 MH/s.

However, the Nvidia requires more energy than the AMD, with a thermal design power of 320 Watts, the industry measure for maximum power consumption. The card from AMD clocks in at 225 Watts. However, this difference in energy efficiency is more than made up for by the greater hashing rate. It's also important to keep in mind that these numbers probably don't reflect actual mining usage entirely.

Professional miners also place a strong emphasis on unit price, but many miners in regions with expensive electricity frequently focus exclusively on energy efficiency. "All three are important," Minehan said referring to hash rate, price and energy usage.

From that point of view, the 5700 XT's price-to- hash rate ratio is almost equal to that of the Nvidia. This measure would also immediately disqualify the beefier RTX 3090, which comes at a $1,500 price tag for a modest 10-15% hashing improvement over its smaller brother.
