What Does DDOS Mean? DDOS stands for designated denial of service, and is a method by which a system can be attacked and disabled by a malicious actor. Let's take a closer look.

What Does DDOS Mean?

A DDoS breach can be defined as a cyber-attack carried out by perpetrators seeking to temporarily block a blockchain network for its users by disrupting the host services. In essence, it is done by overloading the incoming traffic from several sources. That makes it impossible for the host to block a single source and frequently causes systems to become overwhelmed.

Let's make things simpler by using the recent DDoS attack on the UK exchange EXMO as an example:

Attackers sent many transactions totaling $75 million from various sources in an effort to target the exchange. The servers became overloaded due to the rapid spike in trade activity. The EXMO security team found it challenging to determine which of the traffic's many sources was illegal. because there were so many of them. The whole incident affected the servers and crashed them.

Data loss or crypto asset theft do not usually follow a DDoS assault. It costs time – more crucial than money.

How Can I Spot and Avoid a DDoS Attack?

When the network slows down or shuts itself down, it is simple to spot such an attack. For a specific period of time, the services are not available. Although similar scenarios can happen during high traffic, further investigation is necessary to find the real source of the attack. Some of the telltale signs of a DDoS attack include signs like extremely high immediate traffic or an unexpected spike in request volume.

The first step to avoiding DDoS attacks is by choosing a highly decentralized blockchain whose nodes are widely distributed. A blockchain's level of protection against these attacks is highly related to both its node count and hash rate. Bitcoin use and Ethereum are incredibly resistant to DDo of this. Furthermore, keep your funds secure in a separate wallet instead of a centralized exchange. So they remain safe and accessible in the case of a disruption.
