What Happens When You Reset Metamask Wallet?
A wallet reset essentially clears your Secret Recovery Phrase and your accounts from the software, resetting your MetaMask Extension or Mobile app to the state it was in when you first downloaded it. You will have to enter your Secret Recovery Phrase once more to get access to your wallet following a reset. (Because of this, you should never reset your wallet unless you are in possession of your SRP.)
Currently, only Mobile users may access the wallet reset feature (on the lock screen, when you log out). However, you can also reset your wallet on Extension. See our steps below for more detail.
How To Reset Metamask Wallet?
Mobile
- To start with, you will need to uninstall MetaMask. You must do this via the extension settings in your browser rather than the app itself. For instance, you may just right-click the extension icon in the top right corner of Chrome and select "Remove from Chrome."
Install MetaMask again.
- You'll get a welcome message when you reinstall the MetaMask Extension. Click the link. You'll now have the choice of importing an existing wallet or making a new one. Since we're resetting in this case, we just want to import.
- Enter your preferred password along with your Secret Recovery Phrase (all lower case).
If you entered your Secret Recovery Phrase correctly, the process is now complete, and you should be able to access your wallet in Extension as before.
Bottom Line
Only follow these instructions if you have your Secret Recovery Phrase backed up and available.
You might never be able to access your account again if you begin the reset process without it.
You can find instructions on how to reveal your phrase here if you don't have it on hand and are still logged into MetaMask.
Please be aware that after you reset your wallet, you won't be able to recover any accounts (or addresses) that don't come from your Secret Recovery Phrase. These imported accounts, whether they were imported via a hardware wallet or a private key, are not covered by the Secret Recovery Phrase and must be manually added again. Please be sure to verify that you have the private key details for any imported accounts before proceeding with the reset process. See here for more on imported accounts.
