Tokenized stocks are digital assets that mimic the price action of publicly traded stocks. In this article, we will discuss, "What Is a Tokenized Stock? Who Can Trade Tokenized Stocks?" Let's get started.

What Is a Tokenized Stock?

A tokenized stock is basically similar to an equity share in a publicly traded company, such as a stock traded on the Nasdaq or S&P 500. The difference is that tokenized stocks are represented by digital tokens.

Shares often arrive in an investor's brokerage account when they purchase a traditional stock on an exchange or during an initial public offering (IPO). The process is the same for tokenized stocks, with one significant exception: because these shares are based on a blockchain, They can be purchased and traded on a cryptocurrency exchange.

Once listed, the tokens can be purchased and exchanged like any other cryptocurrency on a cryptocurrency exchange. Those who hold a stock token gain exposure to the underlying stock pretty much as if they owned it, including dividend payouts where applicable. However, they t actually own shares. They own a derivative that is backed by actual shares.

Who Can Trade Tokenized Stocks?

Anyone can theoretically trade tokenized stocks. The beauty of cryptocurrencies in general is that there are no entry barriers other than the need for an internet-connected device and some initial funds.

For investors who desire access to traditional financial markets but do not have it, tokenized stocks may be the best option. For instance, a person without a bank account cannot open an account with a stock brokerage but can be able to trade tokenized stocks.

A potential stock token investor can do this by purchasing Bitcoin with cash at a Bitcoin ATM, sending it to their personal wallet, and depositing it at a trading platform for tokenized stocks. As long as they are able to verify their identity to pass KYC requirements , they'd be unlikely to encounter any problems with this process.
