This article is about what is bitcoin/">Bitcoin Taproot. The Taproot upgrade improved the privacy, scalability, and security of the Bitcoin blockchain, paving the way for decentralized app (dApp) creation. By introducing new signature schemes and a flexible transaction structure, it enhanced the long-term viability of the Bitcoin blockchain, specifically supporting the development of decentralized finance (DeFi).

What is Bitcoin Taproot?

Bitcoin Taproot is a major upgrade to the Bitcoin protocol that aims to enhance the network's privacy, security, and scalability while introducing new features. It is set to be implemented through a soft fork, which means it is backward-compatible and does not require a mandatory upgrade from all network participants.

The key feature of Taproot is the introduction of a new scripting language called Tapscript. This scripting language provides greater flexibility and efficiency compared to the existing Bitcoin scripting language. Tapscript allows for the creation of more complex and advanced smart contracts while reducing the visibility of these contracts on the blockchain, improving privacy.

One of the primary benefits of Taproot is improved transaction privacy. By implementing Taproot, all transactions, regardless of their complexity, will appear similar on the blockchain, making it harder to distinguish between regular transactions and those involving more advanced smart contracts. This increased privacy is achieved through the concept of "scriptless scripts," which allows for the execution of complex transactions without revealing the exact details of the contract on the blockchain.

Another advantage of Taproot is increased efficiency and scalability. It achieves this by introducing a concept called "Schnorr signatures," which replaces the existing elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA). Schnorr signatures are more compact, resulting in smaller transaction sizes and reducing the overall data load on the blockchain. This improvement in efficiency allows for more transactions to be processed within a given block, enhancing the scalability of the Bitcoin network.

Additionally, Taproot offers enhanced security through the concept of "MAST" (Merkelized Abstract Syntax Trees). MAST enables the execution of complex smart contracts by revealing only the necessary parts of the contract on the blockchain, reducing the risk of potential vulnerabilities and making the system more resilient.

How is the Impact of the Taproot Upgrade and Surge?

Bitcoin investors appear to be bullish despite heightened volatility. The number of addresses sending BTC to exchanges hit a 2-year low of over 3.700. potentially indicating that investors are willing to hold the asset in anticipation of a new rally.

The Taproot upgrade paved the way to create decentralized apps (dApps) on the Bitcoin blockchain by improving the privacy, scalability, and security of the network. This upgrade is expected to have long-term viability and support the development of DeFi by introducing new signature schemes and a flexible transaction structure.

Network activity has surged with the adoption of Taproot. Glassnode data suggests that on May 7. over 75% of Bitcoin on-chain transactions used Taproot, a significant increase from 1.536% at the beginning of the year. This adoption has led to a rise in network traffic, with transaction counts increasing over 2x compared to the 2022 baseline.

As a result of increased network activity, the average fee rate has reached its highest level in nearly two years. On May 7th, the average fee per Bitcoin transaction rose to $19.2. the highest since April 2021.

Despite the current congestion in the network, characterized by over 455.000 transactions waiting to be confirmed in Bitcoin's mempool, investors remain optimistic. While concerns of potential network attacks exist, evidenced by Binance temporarily halting BTC withdrawals due to the large volume of pending transactions, the low number of addresses sending BTC to exchanges indicates a willingness among investors to hold the asset in anticipation of a new rally.

Bottom Line

In this article, we will discuss what is Bitcoin Taproot. Bitcoin Taproot represents a significant upgrade to the Bitcoin protocol, aiming to improve privacy, scalability, and security while expanding the capabilities of smart contracts.
