What is Risk Averse Meaning? Risk aversion is the tendency to avoid risk and have a low risk tolerance. Let's take a closer look.

What is Risk Averse Meaning?

Risk aversion is the tendency to avoid risk. The investor who prefers capital preservation over the possibility of earning a higher-than-average return is referred to as risk-averse. In investing, risk equals price volatility. A risky investment has the potential to double or triple your money. Over time, a conservative investment will increase gradually and steadily.

Low risk means more stability. A low-risk investment ensures a good but unexpected return and virtually eliminates the possibility of losing any of the initial investment. A low-risk investment will often give a return that is equal to or slightly higher than inflation over time. A high-risk investment has the potential to make or lose a lot of money. Risk-averse can be contrasted with risk-seeking.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Risk Averse?

In terms of investing, exhibiting risk aversion entails staying away from risky securities. Individuals with limited risk tolerance should look for investments and financial methods that meet their needs. As a result, one benefit is that the risk of losses is reduced. Fixed-income Securities are one example of a low-risk investment that offers guaranteed cash flows and consistent long-term profits.

However, with low risk comes low expected return. The risk-return tradeoff really works against a risk-averse investor who stays clear of stocks and other risky investments. These risk-averse investors will typically see lower total returns, ly over time particularly only. Risk aversion can also lead people to irrationally avoid otherwise good opportunities and may stay away from the markets entirely, putting them at a disadvantage when saving for things like retirement. Moreover, money kept idle in savings or "under the mattress will lose buying .power over time as it is eroded by inflation.
