This article is about what is the diversity of hacking. As per a 13 February report by CoinGecko, exploiters used an array of methods to steal nearly half of the total cryptocurrency stolen in 2022.

What is the Diversity of Hacking?

The term "diversity of hacking" refers to the wide range of hacking techniques, methods, and approaches used by individuals or groups to exploit vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, or software. Hackers employ diverse strategies to gain unauthorized access, manipulate data, disrupt services, or carry out other malicious activities.

Here are a few examples of diverse hacking techniques:

Social Engineering: This involves manipulating individuals through psychological tactics to obtain sensitive information or access to systems. It can include phishing, impersonation, or pretexting.

Malware Attacks: Hackers use various types of malicious software, such as viruses, worms, Trojans, or ransomware, to gain control over systems, steal data, or extort money.

Network Exploitation: Hackers exploit vulnerabilities in network infrastructure, such as routers or firewalls, to gain unauthorized access to systems or intercept data.

Web Application Attacks: Hackers target vulnerabilities in websites or web applications to compromise databases, inject malicious code, or gain administrative privileges.

Zero-day Exploits: These are vulnerabilities that are unknown to software developers and, therefore, lack patches or fixes. Hackers discover and exploit these vulnerabilities before they are addressed, allowing them to gain unauthorized access.

Physical Attacks: Hackers may physically access computer systems or devices to bypass security measures or install malicious hardware components.

Insider Threats: Attacks can originate from individuals within an organization who misuse their access privileges to compromise systems, steal data, or carry out sabotage.

What are the Biggest Hacks of 2022?

Axie Infinity's Ronin Bridge Hack: In March 2022. the Ronin bridge, which connects the Ronin chain and the Ethereum network for the popular game Axie Infinity, was hacked. The attack resulted in the loss of $625 million. The North Korean hacking group Lazarus was later revealed to have obtained access to private keys used to sign transactions, allowing them to steal 173.600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC from the bridge.

Wormhole Token Bridge Exploit: In February 2022. attackers exploited a vulnerability in the Wormhole token bridge. They used a forged signature to bypass verification and minted $326 million worth of cryptocurrency. The exploit was possible because Wormhole failed to validate guardian accounts, enabling hackers to create tokens without the necessary collateral.

Nomad Smart Contract Configuration Issue: In August 2022. a misconfigured smart contract on the decentralized finance token bridge Nomad allowed users to withdraw an unlimited amount of funds. This led to a phenomenon known as "crowd looting," where more than $190 million was drained from the platform.

Market Manipulation Exploit: In October 2022. a hacker exploited a market manipulation technique. They purchased tokens from a project and artificially inflated their value before taking out under-collateralized loans from the project's treasury. This flash loan attack resulted in the theft of $116 million.

Oracle Issue Hacks: Hackers targeted Oracle services and manipulated price feed data, resulting in the theft of $54 million. By tampering with the price feed data, the attackers aimed to cause smart contract failures or carry out flash loan attacks.

Bottom Line

In this article, we will discuss what is the diversity of hacking.  It's crucial for organizations and users to prioritize robust security measures and stay updated on potential risks to protect their assets in the digital landscape.
