What is the Relationship Between Bitcoin and the El Salvador President?

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has been a vocal supporter of Bitcoin and has made headlines recently for making Bitcoin legal tender in the country. In June 2021. he introduced a bill to the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly proposing to make US legal tender alongside.

The bill was passed by the Legislative Assembly on June 8. 2021. and signed into law by President Bukele on June 9. 2021. This means that Bitcoin is now a legal form of payment in El Salvador, and businesses are required to accept it as payment for goods and services.

President Bukele has cited several reasons for his decision to make Bitcoin legal tender, including the potential to promote financial inclusion, reduce transaction costs, and attract investment to the country. However, the move has also been controversial, with some critics expressing about the concerns potential risks associated with using Bitcoin as a currency.

How Did Buterin Attack the El Salvador President?

A recent tweet by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, he criticized El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele for his decision to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in the country. Buterin referred to Bukele as "a dictator" and expressed concern about the potential negative effects of the move on El Salvador's economy.

El Salvador is heavily reliant on remittances from its citizens living abroad and that Bitcoin could potentially reduce the fees associated with these transfers. However, the volatility of Bitcoin and the potential risks involved in using it as a currency.

Overall, it represents a somewhat balanced view of the situation, acknowledging both the potential benefits and risks of El Salvador's adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender while also highlighting Buterin's criticism of the move.

Buterin responded to a top comment post in Reddit's “Unpopular Opinions” subreddit, arguing that Bukele should not be praised by the crypto community.

Buterin said “Making it mandatory for businesses to accept a specific cryptocurrency is contrary to the ideals of freedom that are supposed to be so important to the crypto space.”

He went on to call the decision to push BTC to millions of Salvadorans with little to no education “reckless,” saying that it “risks a large number of innocent people getting hacked or scammed.”

Bottom Line

It remains to be seen how the adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender will play out in El Salvador and whether it will serve as a model for other countries to follow. This article is about what is the relationship between Bitcoin and El Salvador president.
